Infra-red Thermography Examples

This page describes several examples of faults detected by the aptGroup using Infra-Red thermal imaging.

Idler rolls on a conveyor were imaged as part of a regular condition monitoring survey. A roll was noted as being hotter than those nearby, indicating a problem with its bearing.

Example 1

Example 2

The three fuses on an incoming supply were noted to have different temperatures (left image). After repairs, the three were much more evenly balanced, and showed lower temperatures overall (right image).

Example 3

The scan on the left shows the wire into the fuse terminal to be 131.7° C. The fuse holder and cable termination are the cause.

Immediate action was taken to rectify the problem.

Example 4

An infra-red scan of an electric motor was carried out, which showed a field coil operating at a temperature of 84.7° C. This temperature indicates either a shorted coil or a poor coil end connection, especially as adjacent coils were 10° C cooler.

Example 5

Here we see a faulty crimp lug connector, where the temperature is 122.5° C. A connector this hot is a fire hazard, apart from any damage to the equipment.

Example 6

The T1 terminal connection on the main isolator is operating at a temperature of 171° C, a rise of 131° C above the background temperature within the panel. Note that the damaged insulation on the cables to the rear of the bunch would not be visually obvious during a normal inspection.
